Author bio
Ron Ripley is a New England horror writer whose work feels shaped by old houses, small towns, and the uneasy sense that the dead never really stay put.
He grew up across from a large cemetery, and he has said that the red lights on the graves scared him every night as a kid. That image tells you a lot about his fiction. Ripley likes ordinary places that feel just a little off, and then he pushes them until they turn dangerous.
He writes a lot of ghost fiction, but not the floaty, vague kind.
In his books, ghosts hit back. Houses trap people. Cursed objects travel. Characters bleed. That blunt, physical style is a big part of why readers click with series like Berkley Street, Moving In, and Haunted Collection.
His best-known recurring hero is Shane Ryan, a former Marine and ghost hunter who moves through much of Ripley's interconnected horror universe. Those books mix haunted-house terror with action, investigation, and a steady sense that every win costs something. If you start with Berkley Street, you can watch Ripley build that world one brutal haunting at a time.
But he does not only write one kind of setup. Worthe's Village turns fear into an experiment. Collecting Death runs on cursed relics and grief. Hungry Ghosts brings a more isolated, small-town feel, with local murder and older supernatural lore working together. Even when the premises change, certain Ripley favorites keep returning: wounded veterans, haunted New England spaces, stubborn survivors, and ghosts that feel like characters rather than wallpaper.
He also has a clear second interest, military history. He has said he enjoys writing about it, reading it, collecting books, and talking about it, whether or not his family asked for a lecture. That interest shows up in the discipline of his protagonists and in the way many of his stories treat violence as physical, practical, and costly.
Ripley published The Blood Contract in 2015, and from there built a large catalog of novels, collections, and connected series. Over time that catalog has grown into a web of recurring allies, enemies, haunted objects, and places that reward readers who like to keep going from one series to the next.
He still lives in New England, where he describes himself as a husband and father. When he is not writing, he enjoys driving through small towns with his family and collecting books.
That sounds exactly like a Ron Ripley detail.
