Series background & context

The Tormented Souls books center on Dan Tate, a former journalist whose life has been wrecked by trauma. After surviving a school shooting, Dan is left with PTSD, isolation, and a future that has shrunk down to almost nothing. When he takes a caretaker job near Coffin Cemetery in Anger, New Hampshire, he is not looking for purpose.

The dead find him anyway.

One of the best things about this series is the way it mixes emotional damage with supernatural duty. Dan is not a swaggering paranormal hero. He is exhausted, shaken, and barely holding himself together. But he can hear what the ghosts need, and that pulls him into a town-wide conflict involving fake medium Janet Ladd, a brutal spirit named Beverly, and other dead figures with their own needs and grudges.

Anger becomes more than a setting. It feels like a whole pressure system, full of haunted houses, cemetery politics, old family ties, and spiritual power points that the wrong people want to control. Friendly ghosts, especially the child spirit Eli, give the books some heart without softening the danger.

That balance matters. Tormented Souls can get violent, but it is also one of Ripley's more human series. Dan's recovery, setbacks, and reluctant courage are as important as the hauntings themselves.

If you want a Ripley series with a wounded lead, strong town atmosphere, and a ghost mythology that keeps widening as the books go on, this is a very solid choice.
