Haunted Village Books in Order

Haunted Village is one of Ron Ripley's nastiest and most memorable setups. The main character, Marcus Holt, is an aging Vietnam veteran who already carries enough fear and pain from the past. Then Professor Abel Worthe chooses him as the human subject for a long, cruel experiment.

Worthe is a monster in a lab coat.

He is wealthy, brilliant, and completely immoral. Using money and planning, he has gathered haunted houses, cursed locations, and murderous spirits into a hidden village built for fear. The captives dragged there are forced through one horror after another while Worthe studies their reactions. Marcus becomes Subject B, but he is far from obedient. He fights, adapts, and refuses to give the professor the kind of collapse he wants to watch.

That is what makes the series work. It is brutal survival horror, but it is also a long contest of wills between a stubborn victim and a man who mistakes cruelty for curiosity. Marcus is older than many genre leads, and that gives the books a different rhythm. He is tough, tired, practical, and hard to break.

As the series expands, other characters become important, especially young Alex and, later, Shane Ryan. The haunted sites change, the killer spirits vary, and the violence escalates, but the real thread is Marcus trying to outlast a system designed to reduce people to terror.
