Mallory has no magic in a city full of it, so she trades in secrets instead. When alpha werewolf Alexander hires her to find him a mate, feelings complicate the bargain.
Series background & context
The Coldstream Chronicles is a spin-off from The Cat Lady Chronicles, set in the same magical border city of Coldstream. Instead of Kit McCafferty, this series begins with Mallory Nash, a woman with no magic in a city almost completely shaped by it.
Mallory is a squib.
That means no spells, no shapeshifting, no vampire strength, and no flashy supernatural gifts. In Coldstream, that could make her easy to dismiss. Mallory has made sure it does not. She deals in knowledge, secrets, favors, and carefully worded bargains, turning information into the kind of power magical people cannot ignore.
In Squib, Alexander MacTire enters her life. He is an alpha werewolf, wealthy, forceful, and looking for a mate. He wants Mallory to find him the perfect match. She wants very little to do with him, especially once the job starts feeling less like business and more like trouble with teeth.
The tone is lighter and more romance-forward than Kit's murder mysteries, but it still belongs to Coldstream. Magical politics, old favors, supernatural clients, and the city's many species all shape Mallory's choices. Her lack of magic becomes one of the most interesting parts of the setup because she has to win through leverage, wit, and nerve.
Start with Squib. It can be read as a standalone entry point into Coldstream, but readers who have already spent time with Kit will enjoy the shared setting and the sense that this city has many more stories hiding in its streets.
