Series background & context
The Cat Lady Chronicles is set in Coldstream, a magical city on the border between Scotland and England. Its heroine, Kit McCafferty, looks like a quiet woman with a lot of cats and a mostly harmless routine. She feeds her own cats, helps local strays, and keeps decent relations with the neighbors.
That impression is wildly incomplete.
Kit's life changes when a teenage werewolf arrives looking for a place to live. Helping him pulls her into shapeshifter politics, magical crime, and a string of mysteries that reveal Coldstream's charming surface is sitting on top of some very sharp secrets.
The series has a cozy-crime feel, but Kit herself is not soft. She has a hidden past, practical skills, and a willingness to get involved when vulnerable people are in danger. Her relationship with Thane Barrow, a copper-haired werewolf who sees the world in a similar way, adds warmth without turning the books away from their mystery core.
Coldstream is one of Harper's most inviting settings. It has cats, witches, werewolves, vampires, dangerous rivers, monster-filled corners, and enough supernatural local politics to keep any sensible person indoors. Kit is not always sensible. That is part of the fun.
Start with Waifs And Strays, then continue with The Dark Hiss of Magic, A Skirl of Sorcery, Night Maze, and A Killer Heart. The cases are distinct, but Kit's relationships, secrets, and place in Coldstream deepen as the series goes on.
