Eros

by Helen Harper

2014

Cupid, better known as Coop, wants pleasure, not true love. When Zeus turns him invisible, his mischief with Apollo pulls ordinary Skye Sawyer into divine trouble in Greece.

Series background & context

Olympiana is Helen Harper's playful take on Greek gods in the modern world. The local reading list here begins with Eros, a standalone-style fantasy romance about Cupid, true love, bad behavior, and the kind of divine lesson that only Zeus would think was reasonable.

The gods are not distant marble statues here.

In Eros, Cupid is better known as Coop, and he is just about the last person who wants to believe in romance. He would rather drink, flirt, and avoid anything that looks like emotional responsibility. That becomes a problem because love is supposed to be his actual job.

When Zeus punishes him by turning him invisible, Coop uses the situation to make trouble for Apollo. His plans collide with Skye Sawyer, a woman stuck in a dead-end stretch of life who suddenly finds herself caught in divine games, unwanted attention, and a job offer that takes her to Greece. The setup is comic and romantic, but it also asks what love means when the god of it has stopped taking it seriously.

The series tone is lighter than Harper's darker urban fantasy books. There is mythology, mischief, romance, and a strong sense that immortals are just as capable of pettiness as anyone else. The gods have power, but they also have grudges, bad habits, and very messy personal lives.

This is a good side trip for readers who like Harper's humor and want something outside her shifter, witch, and supernatural policing series. Start with Eros, especially if you enjoy fantasy that treats mythology with affection but refuses to be solemn about it.
