Series background & context
The Bo Blackman series shifts Helen Harper's world into a darker, more investigative corner of supernatural London. Bo is a young private investigator working for the London firm Dire Straits, and she would much rather deal with ordinary human cases than get tangled up with vampires, daemons, witches, and other members of the triber world.
Naturally, that is not how her life goes.
In Dire Straits, a job serving papers to a daemon goes horribly wrong. Bo is pulled into violence, vampire politics, and a change to her own body that she never wanted. From there, the series follows her attempts to keep working, keep her independence, and hold on to her humanity while London keeps throwing worse problems at her.
The books are urban fantasy mysteries with a hard edge. Harper uses Bo's private investigator role to move through different layers of the city: magic shops, corporate schemes, vampire Families, hidden courts, and criminal corners where supernatural power is treated like currency. Bo is practical and stubborn, but she is also shaken by what happens to her, which gives the series a stronger sense of cost than some of Harper's lighter work.
The ongoing tension comes from identity. Bo is useful because she can cross boundaries, but every case makes those boundaries less clear. She is not fully at home with humans anymore, and she does not trust the supernatural groups trying to pull her in.
Start with Dire Straits and read straight through. The personal fallout, vampire politics, and later mysteries build book by book, ending with Dark Tomorrow, which brings Bo's hidden life and old enemies back to the surface.
