Series background & context
City Of Magic begins in Manchester with Charley, a woman who works as a cleaner by day and a gambler by night. She has a painful past, a practical streak, and no reason to think she is anyone special. Then the city starts falling apart.
Magic changes the rules overnight.
The series opens with Manchester sliding into supernatural disaster. Rats, firestorms, strange blue eyes, werewolves, vampires, and chaotic magic turn the city into a sealed-off pressure cooker. Charley is not a trained hero, but she may be one of the few people capable of bringing order to what is happening.
Harper uses the city setting in a strong way. Manchester is not just a backdrop. It becomes a trapped community where humans and supernatural beings have to work out how to survive together. Supplies, leadership, fear, old grief, and new power all matter. The apocalypse is magical, but the problems are often very practical.
Charley's relationship with Monroe, a Scottish werewolf carrying his own guilt and loss, is one of the emotional threads running through the series. They are both trying to keep moving while the world around them keeps asking more than they know how to give.
The main books in this local list are Shrill Dusk, Brittle Midnight, and Furtive Dawn. Read them in that order. The arc moves from the first shock of magical collapse to the harder question of what kind of society can be built afterward.
