The Noose of a New Moon
by Helen Harper
2021
Devereau Webb enters London's supernatural society as a new werewolf and discovers his status is not welcome everywhere. An illegally turned girl and brutal murders pull him deeper in.
Series background & context
Wolfbrand is a spin-off from the supernatural London world of Firebrand. It follows Devereau Webb, a werewolf whose new life gives him power, status, and a very fast introduction to the parts of supernatural society that do not make the rulebook.
He is in deep water from the start.
Devereau has lived through hard times before, so he is not naive about city life or danger. But becoming part of London's supernatural scene brings a different set of problems. Not everyone welcomes him. Not every werewolf change is legal. And when a young werewolf girl is illegally turned and connected to brutal murders, Devereau has to face what his own predatory strength can do.
The first book, The Noose of a New Moon, follows on from events in Midnight Smoke, the third Firebrand novel, although it can be read separately. That connection gives the series a shared world feel without making Emma Bellamy's story required homework for every page.
The tone is urban fantasy with crime, werewolf politics, and a focus on power. Devereau is not just learning how to be strong. He is learning what responsibility looks like when strength can frighten people, attract enemies, and change the way every room reacts to him.
Read The Noose of a New Moon first, then Licence To Howl. Readers who already know Firebrand will catch more of the setting and crossover context, but Wolfbrand has its own central conflict and its own werewolf-driven stakes.
