Series background & context

Firebrand is Helen Harper's supernatural police procedural, set in a London where werewolves, vampires, pixies, and other preternatural beings live alongside humans, not always peacefully. The heroine is Detective Constable Emma Bellamy, whose first posting to the Supernatural Squad goes about as badly as a first day can go.

She gets murdered.

Then she wakes up in the morgue twelve hours later, very much alive. That impossible resurrection turns Emma's new job into something personal. She has to solve supernatural crimes while also figuring out what she is, why someone killed her, and whether they are likely to try again.

The series combines case-of-the-book mysteries with a larger arc about Emma's identity. Each installment gives the Supernatural Squad a new problem, grave robbing, murders, political summits, old family trauma, serial killers, and cold cases. At the same time, Emma becomes more connected to the supernatural community she is supposed to police.

Lord Lukas Horvath, a powerful vampire, is central to the slow-burn romantic thread. The relationship is important, but Harper keeps the detective work in the foreground. Emma's colleagues, supernatural allies, and enemies all help build a version of London that feels crowded, political, and constantly one bad decision away from violence.

Start with Brimstone Bound and read in order through Fortune's Ashes. The seven-book arc steadily answers questions about Emma's powers, her past, her place in the Supernatural Squad, and the fragile balance between London's human and supernatural worlds.
