Series background & context

Charles Soule helped shape Star Wars: The High Republic from the beginning, and his books provide some of the era's main pillars. The setting is roughly two centuries before the Skywalker saga, when the Republic is expanding into the Outer Rim and the Jedi are widely seen as protectors, explorers, and helpers.

Light of the Jedi is the clearest starting point. A disaster in hyperspace sends fragments of a destroyed ship hurtling across the galaxy, threatening entire systems. Jedi from many worlds have to coordinate a rescue while a new enemy, the Nihil, turns chaos into a weapon.

The mood begins in hope, then gets harder.

Soule's High Republic comics move through the aftermath. They spend time with Jedi such as Keeve Trennis, Sskeer, Bell Zettifar, and others who are trying to protect frontier communities while the Nihil grow more organized. The books make room for action, strange creatures, haunted relics, and the quieter cost of being asked to serve when the danger never really stops.

The Blade reaches back to Phase II, an earlier period in the era's history. It follows Porter Engle, a celebrated Jedi Master whose calm public image sits beside a much more complicated past. Shadows of Starlight returns after the fall of Starlight Beacon, when survivors have to regroup and decide what being a Jedi means after a devastating defeat.

The scope keeps widening, but people remain the point.

Soule's part of the High Republic is ideal for readers who enjoy an ensemble story. You get disaster response, frontier adventure, Jedi philosophy, and an ongoing conflict that turns the Republic's confidence into a difficult test. Start with Light of the Jedi, then follow the comics if you want the wider cast and longer fallout.
