Series background & context
Undiscovered Country imagines a near future in which the United States has sealed itself off from the rest of the world for decades. No one knows exactly what happened behind the border. When a global pandemic creates a desperate need for a cure, an international team is sent inside.
What they find is not the America they expected. It is a shifting, hostile landscape built from myths, fears, dreams, and exaggerated versions of the country's own history. Every new region has its own rules, dangers, and idea of what America is supposed to be.
Getting in is only the first problem.
Charles Soule co-writes the series with Scott Snyder. Their expedition includes scientists, soldiers, diplomats, and people with personal reasons for entering the closed country. That mix keeps the story focused on disagreements inside the group as well as threats outside it. They need each other, but they do not share the same goal or trust.
The series is science fiction with a surreal adventure structure. One arc may feel like a monster story, another like a western, political thriller, or nightmare version of national mythology. The changing settings are exciting, but they also ask what a country remembers, what it hides, and what happens when a national story becomes more powerful than reality.
Start with Undiscovered Country, Vol. 1: Destiny. The collected volumes tell one long journey, and each new stop builds on the losses and revelations of the last. It is best read in order.
Expect a fast, strange, high-concept comic that uses an impossible future America to ask very current questions.
