Series background & context

Charles Soule's Star Wars: Poe Dameron follows the Resistance's best pilot before and around the events of The Force Awakens. Poe is brave, talented, stubborn, and willing to take a risk before anyone has finished explaining the plan.

He is not working alone. The series centers on Black Squadron, a tight group of pilots and operatives who fly dangerous missions for General Leia Organa. Their assignments include tracking First Order agent Terex, searching for Lor San Tekka, and gathering information the Resistance badly needs.

It is a spy story as much as a starfighter comic.

Poe's confidence can make him look uncomplicated from a distance, but Soule uses the series to show the burden behind that image. Poe is expected to succeed. His squad trusts him. Leia needs him. Those expectations become harder to carry when missions fail or personal loyalties collide with the larger war.

The cast also gives the book room to move beyond Poe. Black Squadron members have their own strengths, tensions, and reasons for fighting. BB-8 is central, too, especially when his information and loyalty put him at the center of a First Order pursuit.

Start with Black Squadron. The volumes are easiest to read in order because Terex, Lor San Tekka, and the squad's changing relationships form long-running threads. Readers who enjoy the sequel-era films but want more time with the Resistance will find this a natural next stop.

The tone is quick, adventurous, and often funny, but the looming First Order keeps the stakes close.
