Series background & context

Charles Soule's Red Lanterns follows the angriest corner of the Green Lantern universe. Red power rings are fueled by rage, and their users are often people who have suffered terrible loss or injustice. That gives the group a different moral center from a traditional superhero corps.

The main figures include Atrocitus, Guy Gardner, Bleez, Dex-Starr, and other Red Lanterns trying to decide whether rage can be used for protection instead of simple revenge. Their answer is never easy, because anger can reveal a real wrong while also making everything worse.

Rage is useful. It is not safe.

Soule's run begins in the middle of wider Lantern continuity and turns the title toward the uneasy idea of the Reds as protectors of the vulnerable. Guy Gardner's arrival changes the group dynamic sharply. He understands military discipline and heroism, but he is also more than capable of matching the Reds' anger.

The stories connect to events such as Lights Out and Godhead, but the collected volumes explain enough to keep the emotional story clear. The important question is whether people who have been hurt can make a new purpose from that pain without becoming what they hate.

Start with Blood Brothers, then continue through Forged in Blood. These collections bring together the core cast and show the Red Lanterns shifting from a loose force of vengeance toward something stranger and more unstable.

Expect cosmic superhero action with ugly emotions, dark humor, alien worlds, and a team where every alliance is tested by temper.
