Author bio

Marissa Farrar was born in Devon, England, and has said she grew up wanting to be all sorts of things, depending on the day. One of those dreams stuck for a while. She wanted to be a vet, worked as an assistant in a veterinary surgery for years, and later earned a degree in Zoology.

But writing was there early.

She has talked about making up stories as a child and knowing, even then, that books were the thing she kept coming back to. During university, she found herself trying to squeeze writing into the gaps, and after finishing her degree she spent several more years working and writing before finally publishing.

Her first book to reach readers was The Dark Road in 2012, a horror novel set in Cambodia. She has also mentioned an even earlier manuscript, a ghost story inspired by a dream, that was so rough it went straight into a drawer. That feels like a very writerly beginning, honestly. Not the dramatic overnight breakthrough, just years of practice, false starts, and then keeping at it anyway.

Since then, she has become a very prolific author. She writes dark romance most often, but not only dark romance. Her catalogue also moves through paranormal romance, reverse harem, fantasy, mafia romance, and psychological thrillers. Under the name M.K. Farrar, she writes crime fiction, including the DI Erica Swift and Detective Ryan Chase books.

That range sounds wide on paper, but her stories tend to share a few things.

She likes pressure. She likes characters with secrets, messy pasts, and hard choices in front of them. In the romance books, that can mean dangerous attraction, captivity, pack politics, vampires, or criminal families. In the crime novels, it means detectives trying to do their jobs while life keeps following them into the station. Either way, the emotional stakes are usually high from the start.

A few titles give a good sense of the spread. Alone and the wider Serenity series lean into dark vampire romance. Autumn's Blood opens the shifter-heavy Spirit Shifters books. Cold Hard Kisses shows her taste for possessive mafia romance. The Eye Thief, written as M.K. Farrar, moves cleanly into police-thriller territory. Readers who stick with her usually seem to like that mix of danger, pace, and strong emotional pull.

Her life away from the page sounds a little calmer, though not exactly quiet. She has said she married the New Zealander she met at a Christmas party when she was twenty-one. She has also lived in Australia and Spain, and now lives in the English countryside with her husband, three daughters, and a lively collection of rescue pets and other animals.

That animal thread never really went away.

When she is not writing, she has described herself as spending time with family, looking after the household menagerie, baking, reading, and binge-watching television. It is a nice contrast to the worlds she writes, which are often full of killers, monsters, criminals, or all three. Farrar's books may go dark, but the path that got her there feels grounded, practical, and built book by book.
