Series background & context
The Detective Ryan Chase books are M.K. Farrar's Bristol police procedurals, and they have a slightly different texture from the Erica Swift series. The cases are still dark, but Ryan's voice brings a worn, bruised quality to them. He is already carrying grief and strain before each new investigation begins, which gives the books a steady undercurrent of personal damage.
The series opens with Kill Chase, where a body in the Avon drags Ryan and his Major Crimes team into a brutal investigation. From there the books keep the pressure on. Chase Down, Paper Chase, Chase the Dead, and Silent Chase all promise cases that are nasty, fast-moving, and tied to the hidden lives of the people around them. System Failure works as a short prequel if you want an extra early piece of Ryan's world.
These are police procedurals first.
What makes them work is the balance between solid casework and a detective who feels humanly stretched. Ryan is not written as a machine who solves crimes and then resets between books. The job keeps costing him something. If you want M.K. Farrar's crime fiction with a male lead, a Bristol setting, and a little more traditional detective-team structure, Ryan Chase is the best place to go.
