Series background & context
Law of Sandtown shifts M.K. Farrar's crime fiction to California and immediately gives it a rougher, dustier atmosphere than the London or Bristol books. The lead is Detective Lawrey Winters, and what makes her different from Erica Swift or Ryan Chase is that the setting is personal almost from the start. Sandtown is not just another case location. Her troubled son lives there.
That matters a lot in The Scorched Girls, where a burned trailer and a closed-lipped desert commune bring Lawrey into a place that does not want police attention. The later books keep digging at the same idea. Communities built on secrecy are hard to investigate from the outside, and even harder when the person leading the case has a reason to care beyond the badge.
The desert gives the series a nice edge.
It feels exposed and hidden at the same time, which suits stories about people protecting their own no matter the cost. If you like crime novels where place is doing real work, and where the detective's family connection sharpens every choice, Law of Sandtown is a strong little trilogy to pick up in order.
