Author bio
Karina Halle was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, and grew up on Canada’s west coast. That setting matters. Her books keep circling back to fog, forests, storms, wild coastlines, and the feeling that something strange could be waiting just beyond the safe path.
Before novels took over, she spent years trying different creative routes. She studied screenwriting at Vancouver Film School, earned a Bachelor of Journalism from Thompson Rivers University, and worked as a music and travel journalist. That mix shows in the books. She knows how to write motion, place, and the odd details that make a scene feel lived in, whether the story is set on a haunted road trip, a rock tour, a palace, or in a mythic underworld.
Then fiction became the thing that stuck.
A big early turning point was Darkhouse, the first Experiment in Terror novel. It introduced Perry Palomino and Dex Foray, and it also introduced the blend Halle would keep building on, romance, danger, humor, and the supernatural. Readers who start there usually stay for the slow burn between the leads, but also for the genuinely eerie atmosphere and the way each case pushes the characters harder.
She did not stay in one lane for long.
With Sins & Needles and the rest of The Artists Trilogy, she moved into darker romantic suspense, full of con artists, criminals, and messy loyalties. Love, in English showed a more emotional, travel soaked side of her writing. The Royals Next Door and A Nordic King lean warmer and more playful, while River of Shadows, Black Sunshine, and Realm of Thieves dive into death gods, vampires, and dragon eggs without losing the intense romantic pull that runs through nearly all her work.
That range is part of what readers tend to like about her. One book might be a contemporary romance with sharp banter and family complications. The next might be gothic horror, royal drama, or a very dark fantasy. Even when the settings change, her characters often feel related. They are bruised, restless, funny in self-protective ways, and usually terrible at choosing the easy path.
She has also built her career in a practical, flexible way. Some books were self-published, others came out with major publishers, and over time she became the kind of writer who can move between publishing models without sounding like a different person on the page. Her work has been translated into many languages, and she has written for both page and screen.
Now she splits her time between Victoria, British Columbia, and Los Angeles with her husband and their dog, Perry. That sounds very on brand for a writer whose catalog can jump from small town longing to haunted castles to royal bodyguards in a single shelf.
If you are new to Halle, the best starting point really depends on your mood. If you want eerie and addictive, start with Experiment in Terror. If you want dark romantic suspense, try Sins & Needles. If you want something softer and funny, The Royals Next Door is an easy way in. And if you want myth and monsters, River of Shadows shows just how far she likes to push a love story into the dark.
