That immediately tells you the series is interested in crime, magic, and survival before it is interested in courtly fantasy polish. The central heroine, Brynla Aihr, has already lived through enough to make her practical. She escaped a dragon worshipping cult and now survives by doing work that can get her killed.

Then Lord Andor of House Kolbeck drags her into something bigger.

From there, the series builds outward into rival houses, criminal empires, political maneuvering, prophecy, and the question of what happens in a world where dragons are both trapped and still powerful enough to reshape everything. Brynla and Andor clash right away, which gives the romance a strong enemies to allies feel, but the external plot is doing real work too.

Dragemor itself feels like a place where everybody wants something and nobody is safe for long. Magic has a price. Loyalty shifts. Information matters. And every choice seems capable of feeding a larger conflict. That makes the romance hotter, because the characters do not have the luxury of keeping their feelings separate from the politics around them.

Halle’s fantasy books often work best when the world feels slightly dangerous even in the quiet scenes, and that is true here. The dragon egg trade is more than a neat concept. It is the engine that keeps pulling Brynla into deeper risk and closer to people she would probably be smarter to avoid.
