Series background & context

Underworld Gods is Karina Halle leaning all the way into dark fantasy romance. The series begins with Hanna Heikkinen, a young woman who heads to northern Finland after her estranged father dies, only to learn that death is not nearly as final as she thought. To save him, she ends up traveling into Tuonela, the realm of the dead, where she meets Tuoni, the God of Death.

He is not interested in helping for free.

That bargain, marry Death and stay in his realm in exchange for her father’s life, powers the whole series. What starts as a sacrifice story becomes something much bigger as Hanna moves from terrified outsider to someone with real power in Tuonela. The books build around her relationship with Tuoni, but they also open out into court politics, old gods, poisoned magic, ex wives, rival powers, and the frightening question of what kind of queen Hanna might become.

The Finnish mythology angle gives the series its own texture. This is not a generic underworld. Tuonela is eerie, sensual, macabre, and often beautiful in a way that still feels dangerous. Skeleton armies, dead rivers, divine grudges, and haunted forests all fit naturally inside the setting.

The romance is very much a dark fantasy romance. Tuoni is morally gray at best, often worse, and Hanna has to keep her footing while being pulled toward him. That tension is the point. Love and power are tangled together from the start, and neither of them gets to be simple.

If you like myth based romance with strong atmosphere, a demanding central couple, and a world that keeps getting stranger and more dangerous, Underworld Gods is one of Halle’s most distinctive series.
