Twice the Lie

A Grave Christmas
by Marissa Farrar
2022
A holiday-season Erica Swift novella with a darker edge than the title first suggests. It is a shorter visit to the series world, not a cheerful detour.
The Devoted
by Marissa Farrar
2022
Loyalty and obsession sit at the center of this Erica Swift case. As usual, the danger comes not only from violence, but from what people will do for the beliefs they cling to.
The Foundling
by Marissa Farrar
2022
An investigation linked to an abandoned child leads Erica Swift into another knot of buried truth. The title points to a case where identity and history matter just as much as the murder.
The Only Witness
by Marissa Farrar
2022

The Time Keeper
by Marissa Farrar
2023
Another Erica Swift case built around timing, memory, and a killer who plans with care. The series keeps its procedural pace while sharpening the psychological tension.
The Syndicate
by Marissa Farrar
2024
Organized crime and wider corruption push Erica into dirtier territory than a single killer case. This one broadens the danger around her without losing the series tension.
The Wordsmith
by Marissa Farrar
2024
Words themselves become part of the menace in this later Erica Swift thriller. It keeps the series focus on unsettling signatures, human weakness, and detectives under strain.
The Chess Master
by Marissa Farrar
2025
Erica faces an opponent who appears to think several moves ahead of everyone else. The title hints at a calculating case where strategy matters as much as force.
The Drowned Man
by Marissa Farrar
2025
A body pulled from the water opens another knot of secrets for Erica Swift to unravel. It is a strong late-series setup with the usual dark procedural pull.

Series background & context
DI Erica Swift is the biggest of M.K. Farrar's crime series, and it makes sense why. The books have a reliable procedural backbone, a vivid East London setting, and a lead detective whose home life, grief, and old wounds never stay neatly separate from the cases landing on her desk.
The early novels set the tone quickly. The Eye Thief brings in a killer leaving victims blind and helpless. The Silent One moves to a university-campus murder. The Artisan, The Child Catcher, The Body Dealer, The Mimic, and The Gathering Man keep the pressure on with serial crimes, strange signatures, and the sense that Erica is always one case away from collapse. Later books continue to widen the world while keeping that same mix of investigation and personal strain.
This series likes the long game.
You can feel Erica change across the books, and that is part of the appeal. Her team matters, her family responsibilities matter, and so do the cases that cut too close to her own history. If you want a police-thriller series to settle into for a while, this is the clear choice in the Farrar catalogue. Read in order if you can, because the personal arc is worth following from the start.
