Author bio
Christie Golden was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on November 21, 1963. Her childhood and adult life have taken her through several states, including Michigan, Virginia, Colorado, Tennessee, and Texas. She later returned to Virginia for a time.
She was a reader and a writer early on. In seventh grade, Golden asked an English teacher if she could write the first chapter of a novel instead of the assigned short story. The teacher said yes, which sounds like a small moment, but it points neatly toward the career that followed.
Her first novel, Vampire of the Mists, arrived in 1991 as part of the Ravenloft line. It introduced Jander Sunstar, an elven vampire trying to survive grief, danger, and the traps of Barovia. Golden followed it with Dance of the Dead and The Enemy Within, showing early on that she was comfortable with horror, fantasy, and characters caught between what they want and what they fear becoming.
Then came the franchises.
Golden has spent much of her career writing stories set in large shared worlds, especially Star Trek, Warcraft, StarCraft, Star Wars, and Assassin's Creed. That work asks for more than knowing the lore. A tie-in novelist has to find a human-sized story inside a setting crowded with wars, planets, magic, history, and fan expectations. Golden often does that by staying close to a character facing a hard personal choice.
Her Warcraft books are a good example. Lord of the Clans follows Thrall's journey from captivity toward leadership, while Arthas: Rise of the Lich King traces a prince's painful fall. In Jaina Proudmoore: Tides of War, political conflict hits one city and one person with terrible force. Later books such as Before the Storm and Sylvanas keep returning to the uneasy space between duty, grief, revenge, and the hope that old enemies might still choose something better.
She also brought that character-first approach to space opera. Her Star Trek: Voyager novels continue the crew's story after the television series, giving Janeway, Chakotay, Seven of Nine, and others room to face the consequences of finally reaching home. In StarCraft, Firstborn begins the Dark Templar Saga with archaeologist Jake Ramsey, whose discovery leaves him carrying the memories of a dead protoss mystic.
Golden's Star Wars work ranges from the galaxy-spanning politics of the Fate of the Jedi novels to Dark Disciple, adapted from unproduced episodes of The Clone Wars. That book pairs Jedi Knight Quinlan Vos with former Sith apprentice Asajj Ventress on a mission against Count Dooku. It has the pace of a war story, but its real pressure comes from trust, temptation, and two people who do not fit easily together.
She has made room for original fantasy too. Under the pen name Jadrien Bell, she published A.D. 999, a historical fantasy involving Lucifer, Loki, and two mortals facing an approaching disaster. Her own-world novels include Instrument of Fate, King's Man & Thief, and the Final Dance books, beginning with On Fire's Wings. These stories lean into quests, magic, identity, and people trying to choose their own path.
Golden has written more than fifty novels and many shorter works across fantasy, science fiction, and horror. Her career makes a useful reading map for anyone who likes big fictional universes but still wants the story to land on a person, a friendship, a family, or one decision that cannot be taken back.
