Series background & context
Christie Golden's StarCraft novels explore the same tense science-fiction setting as the games, but they slow down long enough to follow the people living inside its wars. Terrans, protoss, and zerg are always part of the larger picture. The immediate problem is usually more personal: memory, survival, guilt, loyalty, or a past that will not stay buried.
The best place to begin is Firstborn, the opening Dark Templar Saga novel. Archaeologist Jake Ramsey enters an ancient Xel'Naga temple and is changed by contact with Zamara, a deceased protoss mystic. Her memories live inside him, putting both his sanity and the future of the protoss at risk.
Nothing stays simple after that.
In Shadow Hunters and Twilight, Jake, Zamara, and their allies face zerg-controlled territory, lost protoss knowledge, and the dark archon Ulrezaj. These books reward readers who like alien history and cosmic stakes, but the core remains Jake's attempt to hold on to himself.
The standalone novels offer another entry point. Devils' Due follows young Jim Raynor and Tychus Findlay after they break with a corrupt Confederate officer. Flashpoint sits between Wings of Liberty and Heart of the Swarm, with Raynor trying to protect Sarah Kerrigan from Arcturus Mengsk's Dominion.
Read the trilogy in sequence. Pick either standalone when you want a familiar game character and a fast, focused adventure.
