Series background & context

Christie Golden wrote two books connected to the 2016 Warcraft film: Warcraft: Durotan, a prequel, and Warcraft Official Movie Novelization. Together, they tell a version of the first clash between Azeroth's humans and orcs through people who are trying to save their homes.

Durotan begins on Draenor with the Frostwolf Clan. Harsh winters and failing herds leave the clan in a desperate position when Gul'dan offers a path to new hunting grounds. Durotan must decide whether survival is worth trusting a powerful outsider whose magic and motives are far from clear.

That choice changes everything.

The movie novelization picks up as orcs cross through a portal into Azeroth. Humans see invaders threatening their realm, while the orcs are refugees fleeing a dying world. Durotan and the human commander Anduin Lothar stand on opposite sides of a war, but both are tied to families, traditions, and leaders who demand hard sacrifices.

These books use a more direct, film-focused version of Warcraft than Golden's game-era novels. The story is still built around familiar ideas, including honor, manipulation, war, and the danger of treating whole peoples as enemies.

Read Warcraft: Durotan first. It gives the Frostwolf perspective and leads straight into the larger conflict of the film novelization.
