Series background & context

Christie Golden's contribution to the Star Wars: Battlefront line is Inferno Squad, a prequel to the campaign story in Battlefront II. It is set shortly after the destruction of the first Death Star, when the Empire is shaken, angry, and determined to answer the Rebel victory with force.

The central team is Inferno Squad, an elite Imperial unit led by Iden Versio. Their mission is to infiltrate the Partisans, the militant rebel group once led by Saw Gerrera. That puts the characters in a dangerous position from the start. They have to look committed to the cause they are investigating while keeping their actual identities hidden.

It is an undercover war story.

The book is interested in how Imperial soldiers see themselves. Inferno Squad believes it is protecting order after a devastating attack, while the Partisans are driven by their own anger at the Empire. Golden does not need to make the politics easy to make the pressure clear. Every friendship, lie, and operation can expose the team.

Readers who know Rogue One will recognize the shadow of Saw Gerrera's movement. Readers coming from the games will get the background for Iden and the squad before the events of Battlefront II. The action is present, but the best tension comes from divided loyalties and the risk that an undercover agent will begin to understand the people on the other side.

Start with Inferno Squad. It is a single, self-contained novel with clear links to both the film era and the game.
