Series background & context

Christie Golden's Starfleet Corps of Engineers entry is Hard Crash, a short novel in the line about Starfleet's specialist problem-solvers. Instead of sending a flagship to make first contact, these stories follow the people called in when an impossible technical disaster needs to be fixed.

The regular team serves aboard the U.S.S. da Vinci under Captain David Gold. Its members include engineers and technical experts from several species, with very different skills and working styles. Their jobs are practical, hands-on, and usually much more dangerous than a repair manual would suggest.

Something is always broken. Usually badly.

In Hard Crash, an alien starship crashes on a populated planet. The S.C.E. team investigates with Geordi La Forge, only to discover that the vessel is far less disabled than it first appeared. Soon the ship seems to have a will of its own and is tearing across the planet's surface.

Expect a compact Star Trek disaster story, with engineering puzzles, a ticking clock, and a team that has to understand the threat before it causes mass destruction. Start with Hard Crash for Golden's contribution, or begin earlier in the wider S.C.E. line to meet the crew from the start.
