Series background & context

The Isle of Wesberrey follows Reverend Jessamy Ward as she returns to the island of her early childhood to become parish priest at St. Bridget's Abbey. She hopes for a new chapter in a familiar place, despite her mother's warnings and her own serious allergy to cats. A murder and unsettling family secrets quickly make the homecoming more complicated than taking up a new job.

Knowing a place doesn't mean knowing its secrets.

The series begins with Holy Homicide. Jess's return places her at the center of a community whose people already have relationships, memories, and expectations of one another. Her role asks her to offer care and guidance, while the criminal problem pushes her to question what people tell her. That combination gives the investigations a personal weight: the people she needs to understand may also be the people she hopes to trust as she builds her life on the island.

The fictional setting is central to the books, written by Penelope Cress with Steve Higgs. An island community brings recurring residents close together and lets a new event disturb connections that were formed long before Jess arrived. Family and friends aren't separate from the setting's history. Their stories help define it, making the task of investigating an offense inseparable from learning how the place has become what it is. For Jess, the mystery can therefore challenge her confidence in her own homecoming.

Mausoleum Madness, Pious Poison, and Divine Death continue the sequence, with further cases returning the reader to familiar people and local relationships. The tone blends cozy mystery, comedy, and a touch of magic. Jess's clerical work gives the books a distinctive social center, while the unusual elements allow her surroundings to retain a sense of wonder as well as suspicion. A peaceful appearance doesn't guarantee a simple explanation, and a familiar face may still leave a question unanswered.

Start with Holy Homicide to understand Jess's arrival, her position at the abbey, and the first problems that unsettle it. Continue in publication order to follow the recurring cast and her developing relationship with the island. Readers who enjoy a sleuth embedded in a community rather than visiting it briefly will find that belonging important here. Jess's challenge is to hold on to her purpose while accepting that care for people doesn't mean taking every account at face value. The mysteries repeatedly ask how she can uncover wrongdoing without losing the sense of connection that brought her back to the place she wants to call home.
