Blue Moon Investigations books in chronological order
Series background & context
Blue Moon Investigations centers on Tempest Michaels, a private investigator who doesn't believe in the paranormal. Taking work from people who think they are haunted or threatened by something supernatural seems like a useful business opportunity. The problem is that their fears can lead him toward real danger, even when he rejects the explanation attached to it. Steve Higgs builds the series around that collision between disbelief and a case that still needs solving.
Tempest wants evidence, not a frightening story.
In Paranormal Nonsense, deaths attributed to a vampire test how firmly he can hold to that position. His clients may have claims too strange for the police, but someone is still being hurt. The need to stop further deaths forces him to act before every question has an answer. That pressure gives the investigations their momentum: explaining an apparently impossible event matters, yet protecting people may require an immediate decision rather than a leisurely debate about what exists.
Tempest's helpers bring plenty of complications of their own. Friends, an army acquaintance, his mother, and his dogs Bull and Dozer form a far less orderly support network than a conventional police department. Amanda Harper becomes another investigator, and Jane Butterworth also takes on a role in the expanding agency. Their presence makes Blue Moon a recurring group rather than a solitary detective passing through unrelated cases. Practical help and awkward personal interactions often arrive in the same conversation.
The sequence continues through The Phantom of Barker Mill, Amanda Harper Paranormal Detective, and other cases involving claims about witches, ghosts, pirates, and unfamiliar creatures. The English setting keeps the supposedly extraordinary close to familiar life: a strange report can interrupt ordinary business, friendships, or family expectations. Humor comes partly from that proximity and partly from Tempest's refusal to accept a dramatic explanation just because someone else finds it convincing. The danger, meanwhile, gives him reasons to keep investigating.
Start with Paranormal Nonsense and follow the sequence to see the agency and its relationships develop. The books combine mysteries, action, and comic friction, with a skeptical protagonist who has invited far more disorder into his life than he intended. Their central question isn't answered by attaching a supernatural label to a case. Tempest still has to establish what is happening, work out who is responsible, and survive the consequences of looking too closely. Readers who enjoy a detective arguing with the premise of his own profession will find that tension running through the adventures.
