Series background & context
Shunned Immortal follows Gus, a magical exile who has tried to keep his abilities out of view while living among humans. He knows about the Caretakers and the veil separating ordinary life from dangerous supernatural forces, but knowledge hasn't made him eager to return to that world. Written by Jake Skelton and Steve Higgs, the series makes his attempted withdrawal the starting point for conflicts that refuse to leave him alone.
Being expelled hasn't freed him from his history.
The sequence begins with Vampire in the Corner Pocket. A Caretaker's murder brings Gus a message he can't comfortably ignore, while a woman in his care knows more than she initially reveals. His situation puts personal caution beside responsibility for someone else. Keeping his magic hidden may have helped him build an ordinary routine, but the new threat asks whether that routine can survive when other people already know how to reach him.
Gus's interest in pool, karaoke, and older rock music gives the human side of his life a definite shape. Those familiar preferences sit alongside his knowledge of a much less familiar system of power. The contrast supports the series' comic voice without removing its dangers. He isn't an innocent newcomer learning every supernatural rule from scratch; he has reasons to dislike what he knows and must decide how much of that knowledge he is willing to use again.
Cue the Magic follows with a request from his former wife Loren, a coven leader facing a conflict among ancient families. Her return connects a political struggle to feelings Gus hasn't neatly put behind him. The series continues through Magic Eight Ball and Graveyard Hustle, keeping his personal history beside new supernatural problems. The tone combines urban fantasy, action, and a protagonist whose reluctance gives way to involvement when the consequences of doing nothing become harder to accept.
Begin with Vampire in the Corner Pocket and follow the sequence so Gus's circumstances and relationships develop in order. These books suit readers who like a magical protagonist with experience, opinions, and unfinished emotional business. His exile isn't just a piece of background explaining how he arrived among humans. It shapes what he wants to avoid, who can draw him back into conflict, and why an apparent chance to walk away may not be enough. Across the adventures, the problem is how to use powers he has concealed while confronting people who remember the life he would prefer to leave behind, without sacrificing the connections he has formed in the meantime.
