Series background & context
Lost In Time is a science-fiction adventure series that turns a child's wish to see dinosaurs into a dangerous journey through the past. In We Are Not Meat, Rapscallion is nearly nine and wants to visit the time base where his uncle works. A secret trip with his father promises a close look at the Cretaceous, but their unauthorized outing collides with other people who want the technology for far less innocent reasons.
Nobody is expecting them to need rescuing.
That absence makes the family relationship central to the danger. Rapscallion and his father aren't simply tourists who can ask an organized expedition for help whenever something goes wrong. Their presence wasn't meant to be known, leaving them vulnerable when the visit becomes a fight to get home. The trip tests the adults' ability to protect a child while also making his curiosity part of the reason they entered the past in the first place.
Dinosaurs give the setting an immediate physical threat, but the technology supplies another. Rival firms are willing to steal access to time travel, and the person behind the system has secrets that change what the visitors think they understand. The past is therefore more than a spectacular landscape full of animals. It becomes a place where decisions made by people in the present can have consequences far outside the moment they intended to change or exploit.
The Time Pirates continues the sequence with Hudson and Rapscallion returning to the Cretaceous to film a documentary. Their earlier experience doesn't mean the next journey is safe. Human ambitions and surviving consequences of earlier activities still shape what awaits them, placing exploration beside conflict over what can be taken from the past. The series blends time-travel problems, family adventure, and survival suspense, keeping the practical task of escaping danger close to the larger question of how the technology is being used.
Begin with We Are Not Meat before reading The Time Pirates, since the first trip establishes the family, the time base, and the hazards surrounding it. The books suit readers who enjoy dinosaurs alongside human wrongdoing rather than treating every threat as an animal waiting in the trees. Rapscallion's enthusiasm makes the extraordinary accessible, while his father's responsibilities give the adventure personal stakes. Across the sequence, seeing the past and surviving it are different goals. The visitors must learn whom to trust, understand what has gone wrong, and find a way out when the route home depends on a system other people have already decided to misuse.
