Series background & context

The Realm of False Gods is an urban fantasy series built around an ancient separation that is beginning to fail. Powerful magical beings once governed humanity, but a death curse drove them into a parallel realm thousands of years ago. People continued without them, and the beings became part of legend. Now the barrier is weakening, and those who expect to reclaim their former authority are finding ways back.

Humanity doesn't know what is coming.

Steve Higgs follows several protagonists whose abilities and histories make them part of the response. Otto is a wizard, Zac is a werewolf, and Anastasia brings another source of power into the widening story. They aren't introduced as a ready-made team with a shared plan. Their separate experiences gradually connect, giving the series an ensemble structure in which individual struggles become parts of a threat larger than any one character initially understands.

Untethered Magic begins the sequence, followed by Unleashed Magic and Early Shift. The early books establish different strands of the story rather than restricting every event to a single viewpoint. Magic has survived in the mortal world, which means the returning beings may not face the unprepared opposition they expect. That possibility creates the central conflict: the power they once held doesn't automatically tell them what humanity or its unexpected defenders can do now.

The contemporary setting matters because its residents have built lives and institutions without knowing the old rulers were merely trapped elsewhere. Their return therefore threatens more than a few isolated victims. It challenges who controls the world and what the people living in it believe possible. The series combines supernatural action with revelations about a hidden past, allowing a character's immediate need to escape, fight, or understand an ability to lead into questions about the fate of humanity.

Read the books in publication order, beginning with Untethered Magic, so the overlapping stories and the larger threat develop together. Titles such as Familiar Territory, Damaged but Powerful, and Demon Bound continue the connected sequence as its different figures become more important to one another. These books suit readers who enjoy an expanding fantasy conflict with multiple protagonists rather than a detective solving an unrelated case in every volume. The ongoing question is how people who didn't choose the same path can recognize their shared danger and use what the returning powers have overlooked. Their differences are part of the story's structure, making cooperation a developing problem rather than an easy solution waiting at the beginning.
