The Best Intentions
by Sarah M Eden
2022
Once an heiress, Gillian Phelps now hides in the country with a kindly benefactress, determined to keep her past to herself. American landowner Scott Sarvol stumbles into her orbit and proves unexpectedly helpful, but secrets, illness, and money troubles make trusting each other risky.
Series background & context
The Huntresses series is Eden’s Regency answer to the question, “What if a group of well born young women quietly decided to look out for one another in a world that often leaves them powerless?” The books center on a circle of friends who have named themselves the Huntresses in private recognition of their shared determination to protect each other’s futures.
In The Best Intentions, Gillian Phelps has fallen from wealth into precarious respectability and is hiding in the country with a kindly older woman. She misses her Huntress friends but believes she has too many secrets to face them. Scott Sarvol, an American who has inherited debt ridden English estates, stumbles into her orbit and proves unexpectedly useful when illness and household crises strike. Their uneasy alliance slowly warms into something more, even as Gillian’s past and Scott’s financial reality threaten to pull them apart.
The Best of Friends shifts focus to another member of the group and leans into the messiness of loving someone who has always been part of one’s life. Longstanding friendships, family expectations, and unspoken feelings collide as two people who have always insisted they are “just friends” are forced to confront whether that label still fits.
By The Best Kept Secrets, the circle has expanded to include Irish sisters Nia and Eve O’Doyle. Outgoing Eve receives devastating news about her family’s finances and quietly decides to sacrifice her own London Season. On the way to a Christmas gathering that will reunite the Huntresses with the Pack, a connected circle of male friends, she and Duke Seymour are stranded by a snowstorm. The enforced closeness at a country inn cracks open both of their carefully managed public faces, but pressures waiting at the party threaten any hope of a future together.
Threaded through all three novels is the idea that friendship can be as fierce as romance. The Huntresses share information, offer sanctuary, and sometimes stage small rebellions on each other’s behalf. The books also weave in familiar figures from Eden’s other series, especially the Jonquil and Lancaster families and the Gents, creating a sense that these women’s stories are part of a much larger tapestry.
Readers who enjoy strong female friendships, house parties gone sideways, and heroes who learn to listen as well as rescue will feel right at home with the Huntresses.
