A Whisper in the Wind

by Sarah M Eden

Training his new neighbor Tacey Wilde to be a ghost broker seems safer than letting her walk away with an all too knowing spirit. But when clients arrive with a ghost who inexplicably remembers him, Mercury Raine realizes his own past may no longer stay buried.

Series background & context

Mercury Raine introduces a whimsical, paranormal thread into Eden’s broader Regency world. These shorter stories imagine a version of high society where fashionable households do not merely display fine paintings or elegant china, they also keep ghosts, and those ghosts are traded, curated, and occasionally upgraded much like any other social accessory.

At the center stands Mercury Raine himself, a once penniless orphan who has built a fortune and a carefully controlled reputation as the most sought after ghost broker in the kingdom. His job is to match clients with the right specter, whether they want a dramatic haunting to impress guests or a discreet presence to guard family secrets. On the surface he is polished and unflappable, but the novellas quickly hint at old wounds and a past he has no intention of sharing.

In Ghost Broker, a visit from Miss Huddleston and her ambitious mother seems like just another transaction. They want to exchange their unfashionable ghost for something grander. Instead, Miss Huddleston arrives with information that threatens to crack Mercury’s well built facade and suggests that the past he has outrun may be catching up.

A Whisper in the Wind deepens that tension. Mercury agrees to train his new neighbor, Tacey Wilde, in the art of ghost brokering rather than risk letting someone with an unusually perceptive spirit walk away. When clients arrive with a ghost who remembers Mercury despite never having met him, he realizes that the secrets tied to his own history are more widespread and more dangerous than he believed.

Future installments promise to continue weaving together lighthearted ghostly antics, slow burn romance, and a long running mystery about Mercury’s origins. The tone is playful, with inventive ghost types and social satire, but there is an undercurrent of real emotion as Mercury’s carefully controlled life is disrupted by people who insist on seeing the man behind the legend.

Readers who enjoy the Jonquil, Gents, or Dread Penny books will recognize similar themes of found family and redemption here, just with a distinctly spectral twist.
