Series background & context

The Proper Romance Victorian books, especially the Dread Penny Society arc, dive into gaslit London, where popular penny dreadfuls and secret societies intersect with matters of the heart. The series balances adventure and mystery with closed door romance, all framed by the world of cheap serialized fiction that fascinated nineteenth century readers.

In The Lady and the Highwayman, school headmistress Elizabeth Black lives a double life. By day she runs a respectable school for girls and writes refined silver fork novels. By night she secretly pens gothic penny dreadfuls under the name Mr. King. Fletcher Walker, a former street urchin turned bestselling penny dreadful author, is part of the Dread Penny Society, a covert group of writers who use their earnings and street connections to protect vulnerable children. When Mr. King’s success threatens the society’s efforts, Fletcher turns to Elizabeth, not realizing she is the rival writer he seeks.

Subsequent novels focus on new couples while gradually advancing an overarching conflict. The Gentleman and the Thief pairs Hollis Darby, a gentleman whose fortune is dwindling, with Ana Newport, a music teacher who moonlights as a thief to keep her family afloat. The Merchant and the Rogue follows Irish immigrant Brogan Donnelly as he infiltrates a suspicious print shop and meets Vera Sorokina, a principled bookseller trying to shield her neighborhood from exploitation.

The Bachelor and the Bride and The Queen and the Knave raise the stakes further, drawing in investigators, masterminds, and long running enemies of the Dread Penny Society. Throughout, chapters of in universe penny dreadfuls are interspersed with the main narrative, echoing and reframing the dangers the characters face in their real lives.

What ties the series together is a focus on ordinary Londoners caught in extraordinary circumstances. Street children, shopkeepers, and overworked teachers stand alongside lords and ladies. The Dread Penny Society itself embodies the idea that storytelling can be an act of resistance and compassion.

Readers can pick up any of the Victorian titles on its own, but reading the Dread Penny books in publication order gives the clearest view of the secret society’s evolution and of the found family that grows up around it.
