Series background & context

Of Mists and Mountains is a medieval Highland family series set in a hard, beautiful Scotland where clan duty never stays in the background for long. The books center on the MacLeods and the people pulled into their orbit, with romance growing out of refuge, forced proximity, political trouble, and old wounds that refuse to stay buried.

It begins with Highland Hope, when Lady Eve Sotherby flees an ugly life in England and takes a risky post in the Highlands, only to end up under the roof of widowed laird Royce MacLeod and his unruly children. That first book sets the tone for the whole series. These are stories about people arriving battered, guarded, or half out of options, and finding that love asks more of them than simple survival.

Family matters here.

Later books follow other connected characters through arranged matches, vanished brides, accusations of treason, memory loss, and second chances. In Highland Reckoning, Brus MacLeod plans to outmaneuver an unwanted betrothal and gets far more attached than he means to. In Highland Prize, Thor MacLeod is caught between duty, a hunted wife, and a dangerous political web. In Highland Heartbreaker, an old broken engagement comes roaring back with secrets, enemies, and a journey across the Highlands.

The setting does a lot of work in this series. Remote holdings, rough weather, hard rides, and the constant vulnerability of clan life shape every choice the characters make. These books are not court romances in tartan. They are grounded in household pressures, border danger, rival loyalties, and the simple fact that one bad alliance can cost people land, family, or safety.

The tone is emotional and high stakes, but not grim for the sake of it. Julie Johnstone likes proud warriors, stubborn women, and couples who begin in conflict and have to build trust the hard way. If you enjoy Highland romances with clan politics, wounded hearts, and a strong sense of family carrying from one book to the next, this series does that very well.
