These books still use many of her favorite romance tools, clan conflict, enemies to lovers, forced marriages, wounded warriors, women trying to reclaim their lives, but they do it in a world where curses are real, witches interfere, and one bad bargain with magic can wreck generations.

A witch's goblet sits near the center of the series. In The Laird's Magical Lass, Freya is cursed after stealing a magical cup in a desperate attempt to escape a loveless future. In The Highlander's Enchanted Healer, Elena uses that same magical world in a revenge plan that pulls her into enemy territory. In The Highlander's Wicked Ways, Murieall is bound to the dead and told she must save a grief-hardened man to save herself. And in The Highlander's Cursed Lass, Katreine is living with the cost of a dangerous wish that refuses to let her age or love safely.

Magic causes the problem, but it does not solve it.

That is part of what makes the series work. The supernatural pieces raise the stakes, yet the real story still depends on trust, courage, and whether the central couple can choose each other when fear would be easier. A hero may start by wanting leverage, revenge, or a reward. A heroine may begin with a secret mission, a prophecy, or a curse. But once the characters are alone together, on the road, in a hostile stronghold, or trapped in an unwanted marriage, the emotional work becomes unmistakably human.

The tone is a touch darker and stranger than Johnstone's straight historical series, but it is still approachable. You are getting Highland settings, clan rivalries, strong chemistry, and a lot of emotional back-and-forth, just with ghosts, prophetic sight, witches, and enchanted objects folded in. Readers who like fantasy elements but still want the structure and payoff of a historical romance will probably be very comfortable here.

If you want the Highland mood of Julie Johnstone's medieval books with the magic turned up, Spellbound Hearts is the series to try. It is dramatic, curse-laden, and very interested in the question of whether love can break what fear and power have twisted for far too long.
