Scottish Scoundrels: Ensnared Hearts sits on Julie Johnstone's Regency side, but it never feels overly polished or sleepy. These books are full of titled women with sharp minds, Scots with complicated pasts, and a lot of emotional business that should have stayed buried and absolutely does not. The setting moves through drawing rooms, ballrooms, gaming trouble, and even the rougher edges of London, so the series has more bite than a standard season romance.

The opener, Lady Guinevere and the Rogue with a Brogue, gives a good sense of the setup. Guinevere has spent years trying to forget the Scot who humiliated her, and in the meantime she has helped create a secret society aimed at punishing bad actors among the ton. That mix of wounded pride, female friendship, and clever retaliation runs all through the series. These heroines are not waiting around to be chosen. They are already doing things, making plans, and often causing a bit of trouble.

And the men are trouble too.

Across Lady Lilias and the Devil in Plaid, Lady Constantine and the Sins of Lord Kilgore, and Lady Frederica and the Scot Who Would Not, the pattern becomes clear. Johnstone likes second chances, false assumptions, guilty heroes, risky bargains, and women who refuse to behave exactly as society wants. One story leans harder into old heartbreak, another into a reckless wager and marriage of convenience, another into underworld danger and bohemian freedom. The romances vary, but the emotional engine stays consistent.

What links the books most is the tension between appearance and truth. Characters are judged too quickly, misread on purpose, or trapped by old scandals. A duke may be more broken than arrogant. A lady dubbed cold may in fact be the most loyal person in the room. Even the lighter banter tends to sit beside something messier, grief, class tension, family pressure, or a threat that turns personal fast.

If you want Regency romance with Scottish flavor, strong heroines, and a little more edge than the ballroom alone can provide, this series is a good fit. It is witty in places, tender in others, and usually most interesting when two stubborn people realize they have been fighting the wrong battle all along.
