Series background & context
Whisper of Scandal is one of Julie Johnstone's darker Regency runs. These books still have the gowns, titles, and drawing rooms, but the mood is sharper and the stakes often run beyond social embarrassment. Revenge plots, hidden identities, secret societies, political schemes, and long-buried family wounds all show up here, giving the series a suspense thread that sits right beside the romance.
The sequence opens with Bargaining with a Rake, where Gillian Rutherford, desperate to escape an unwanted marriage and a suffocating family secret, strikes a deal with Alexander Trevelle, a man bent on revenge. That arrangement, half strategy and half disaster, is a perfect introduction to the series. People come together because they need something, not because the timing is convenient, and they usually find themselves much more exposed than they planned.
The Rutherford family leaves a mark on this series.
In Conspiring With A Rogue, Whitney Rutherford is living in disguise and working as a missing-person finder when she is pulled into a dangerous club and forced back toward the man she still loves. Dancing With A Devil shifts toward a more intimate emotional story, but still keeps the sense that the past is a live wire. After Forever slows the pace just enough to let grief and class tension take center stage, while The Dangerous Duke of Dinnisfree pushes back toward political intrigue and a mission tied to the king.
What links these books is not just recurring names. It is the feeling that private pain and public danger keep feeding each other. A character's heartbreak may make them useful to the wrong person. A lie told for survival may become the exact thing that destroys trust. Johnstone does a good job of making the romance matter even when the plot machinery is moving quickly around it.
If you enjoy Regency romance with more plot than usual, and do not mind a few darker corners, Whisper of Scandal is worth your time. It has disguises, ruined reputations, spies, tutors, rogues, and people trying very hard to stay in control while falling in love at the worst possible moment. For many readers, that combination is exactly the draw.
