Once Upon a Rogue Books in Order

Once Upon a Rogue is Julie Johnstone in a lighter Regency register than some of her darker intrigue-heavy series, though lighter does not mean low stakes. These books still deal with family pressure, damaged reputations, money troubles, and wounded pride. The difference is in the feel. The tone leans more toward romantic sparring, social maneuvering, and intimate emotional disasters between people who should know better and usually do not.

The series begins with My Fair Duchess, where Lady Amelia De Vere agrees to a risky transformation and wager in hopes of winning the wrong man, only to find herself drawn to the Duke of Aversley instead. That is a good blueprint for the whole set. Expectations get overturned. Old assumptions fail. The person a character thinks they want is usually not the person who actually sees them best.

These are very character-led romances.

In My Seductive Innocent, a marriage that begins in heat and unexpected friendship is tested by betrayal and social cruelty. My Enchanting Hoyden turns on a desperate bargain, a poet-hearted lord, and a heroine trying not to be forced into a terrible future. My Daring Duchess brings in broken hearts, anti-rogue schemes, and a duke bent on revenge. Different setups, same pleasure: two smart people trying to outmaneuver circumstance and discovering they are no match for their own feelings.

The series spends most of its time in familiar Regency territory, drawing rooms, ballrooms, country estates, marriage markets, but Johnstone keeps the heroines from feeling interchangeable. These women are awkward, spirited, ruined, defensive, romantic, practical, or all of the above. The heroes, for their part, are rarely pure rakes. Even when society calls them that, they are usually carrying some mix of guilt, financial stress, family duty, or emotional self-protection.

If you like Regency romance that stays close to the couple and lets wit, longing, and social pressure do the heavy lifting, Once Upon a Rogue is a comfortable place to land. The books connect nicely, but each has its own romantic hook, and all of them are built around the same satisfying idea: love tends to arrive exactly where the characters were most sure it should not.
