Author bio

Michael Dalton grew up in Southern California, the kind of kid who always had a book nearby and a head full of what-if questions.

In third grade he turned one of those daydreams into a short story for class. The story was good enough that his teacher did not believe he had written it and accused him of copying it. Instead of scaring him off, that moment became an early hint that writing might be more than a hobby.

As an adult, Dalton built a career as a journalist and editor. Years of filing on deadline, polishing other people's prose, and asking hard questions taught him how to write clean, fast, and clear. It also showed him how ordinary lives can contain strange turns, quiet heartbreak, and the occasional bit of absurdity, all of which would later seep into his fiction.

At the same time he kept experimenting with stories of his own. He liked crossing wires others kept separate, blending magic with technology, science fiction with steamy romance, and game-like rules with messy human feelings. When he finally released The Wizard's Daughters in 2014, an alternate-history adventure about a down-on-his-luck swordsman and two mage sisters in pre-Reformation Germany, it marked his shift from "someday novelist" to working storyteller.

From there the books came quickly. The Makalang series drops former Marine Will Hawthorne into an alien world of beastkin clans and fading fertility, asking what responsibility looks like when you are suddenly the center of a myth. The Demon Hunter novels follow grad student Jimmy Kaplan as he discovers that chemical engineering and demonology have more in common than he ever imagined, and that Hell's bureaucracy can be as exhausting as any day job.

In Neuro-Divergence, Dalton leans into GameLit and death games, trapping an anxious game store clerk in a vast impossible maze where failure is fatal and every victory adds another complicated relationship to his team. The Empyrean Chronicles rework sword-and-sorcery through an isekai lens, as a reborn warrior claws his way from tomb to throne in a brutal new world. Other series, like Shifter Girls, Bikini Days, and Trailer Park Elves, shift the spotlight toward fast cars, found family, and low-stakes slice-of-life hijinks, even when the magic level stays high.

A through line runs under all of this. Dalton likes writing about people who suddenly matter more than they ever expected to, whether that is a single dad who falls into an alien harem legend, a reluctant sorcerer negotiating with angels and demons, or a burned-out mercenary dragged out of retirement for one last job. His protagonists juggle power with obligation, romance with loyalty, and wish fulfillment with the cost of getting what you thought you wanted.

Readers also tend to notice the way his worlds connect. The Santo Domingo novels, the Fateforged universe, and the World of Empyrea share background details, side characters, and consequences, so that a casual decision in one book can echo somewhere completely different later on. Dalton plays with those overlaps without making them homework; you can jump in almost anywhere and still get a full story.

Today he lives in Southern California with his family and a collection of pets that occasionally sneak into his fiction as in-jokes. When he is not drafting the next book, he shares art, snippets, and work-in-progress updates with readers, and answers questions about craft and publishing in plain, practical language.

He still describes himself as someone who has not quite decided what kind of writer he is. The safest answer is that he keeps following the ideas that will not leave him alone, whether they lead to demon contracts, dragon academies, or a quiet romance on a sunny beach.
