Series background & context
The Demon Hunter series follows Jimmy Kaplan, a stressed graduate student in chemical engineering whose life comes apart after his eccentric grandmother dies. He is grieving, broke, and barely keeping up with his research when a mysterious woman moves into his building and his friends begin to die in gruesome, inexplicable ways.
Digging into his grandmother's old books on magic and demonology, Jimmy discovers that she left him more than a cluttered apartment and a box of keepsakes. Her past is tied to an ancient infernal legacy, and Jimmy is part of a long-running bargain that links his bloodline to Hell's bureaucracy. The series opens with him trying to rationalize everything as superstition even as his experiments with sigils and circles start to work.
Over the first few books, Jimmy shifts from skeptic to working sorcerer. He builds a coven that includes a sardonic succubus, a grounded human girlfriend, and a small circle of witches and familiars who each bring their own baggage. Life turns into a juggling act between grad school, romance, and jobs for powerful demons who are as petty and political as any corporate boss.
Every contract pulls Jimmy deeper into the power structures of Hell. He hunts for a lost grimoire, uncovers the true nature of the Breamstone Collective that created him, and learns why the infernal bureaucracy is so interested in his dreams. As his influence grows, his choices start to ripple into Heaven and Purgatory as well, drawing the attention of angels, fallen and otherwise.
At the same time, the books never lose sight of the people around him. Coven members struggle with jealousy, trauma, and different ideas of what family should look like when immortals and mortals share the same bed. Jimmy’s spirit-daughter Else and other children complicate things further, forcing him to ask whether power is worth much if he cannot protect the people he loves.
By the time the story reaches its later volumes, Jimmy has become one of the most dangerous sorcerers in existence, but the core tension remains personal. He must decide what he truly serves: the letter of ancient contracts, the safety of his found family, or a new path that rewrites the rules for angels and demons alike. Expect a blend of occult intrigue, bureaucratic satire, explicit relationships, and a surprising amount of heart threaded through the fire and brimstone.
