Series background & context

Hex Kittens is an episodic urban fantasy series by Michael Dalton, Adam Lance and Neil Bimbeau. It follows Nick, an unlikely monster hunter recruited into a hidden supernatural conflict. The everyday world has dangers most people never see, and his new job is to help keep them under control. The books combine action, dark humour and adult harem romance, with a growing team of magically gifted women making up much of the difference between his responsibilities and his limited qualifications.

The first book gives Nick an unusual collection of resources: a powerful car, a sarcastic slime companion and a talent for meeting women whose abilities are far beyond ordinary. A mysterious woman brings him into the work, but recruitment does not mean he understands the forces directing it. Meeting Tiffany, who has already been fighting supernatural threats alone, begins turning his accidental role into a partnership. Their relationship and the team around them give the series a continuing centre as new assignments lead toward different kinds of monsters.

Being outmatched becomes less lonely when somebody else is willing to face the threat beside him.

In Hex Kittens 2, Nick and Tiffany travel to Libusen, a West Virginia mountain town where residents are disappearing. Tattoo artist Moira Orchard has been giving people protective markings, but something has learned how to use that magic against them. The case introduces another potential ally whose own work has become part of the danger. The change of location shows how the series uses separate investigations to expand its cast and magical world. A job that appears to involve a local problem can expose a threat the team has not faced before.

Later episodes continue adding unfamiliar abilities and creatures to the mix. A girl from another world brings pursuit with her, while another assignment leads into a town whose residents have reasons to protect the monster harming them. The sixth book begins at a fae retirement community and follows missing people and magical contraband toward Las Vegas. Across these cases, Nick’s companions bring different forms of power to the work, while the group has to understand a threat before force alone can solve it. The tone allows absurd situations beside horror and physical danger.

Start with Hex Kittens 1 and follow the numbered sequence to see the relationships and team develop. The series belongs to the wider Fateforged universe, but the opening is designed to work without prior reading. Readers can expect recurring characters, new supernatural cases and explicit adult romance within the same adventure. The continuing appeal comes from an underprepared hero learning to rely on capable companions while dealing with assignments whose apparent simplicity rarely survives first contact with the people or creatures involved.
