A Knight of the Dragon Academy

by Michael Dalton

2025

Young knight Roland leaves the city of Avilus for the Dragon Academy, where bonding with a dragon can make or break a noble’s future. Choosing a squire among ambitious highborn candidates plunges him into family rivalries, court politics, and an epic quest that will test his honor and heart.

Series background & context

A Knight of the Dragon Academy, co-written with Eliza Hawk, is Dalton's take on classic dragon-rider fantasy filtered through his interest in honor, complicated loyalties, and messy relationships. It offers a slightly more traditional epic feel while still playing with romance and power.

The story centers on Roland, a young knight from the city of Avilus. In this world, prestige and real influence flow to those who bond with dragons through the Dragon Academy, an institution that trains squires, selects potential riders, and sends them out on quests that can shape the fate of kingdoms.

At the start of the series Roland is more idealist than politician. He dreams of bonding with a dragon and serving his city with honor, not of navigating the tangled rivalries of noble families. Those dreams are quickly tested when he must choose a squire from among the highborn candidates vying for his attention.

His choice, and the way he makes it, entangles him with two very different women whose families have their own agendas. Managing their rivalry, feelings, and growth as squires becomes just as challenging as facing bandits or monsters on the road. The second book makes this explicit as Roland's first quest turns into a crash course in people management, not just battlefield tactics.

Beyond the interpersonal drama, A Knight of the Dragon Academy explores the politics of Avilus and its neighbors. Religious factions, foreign powers, and hidden enemies all have stakes in who controls the dragons and the knights who ride them. Roland's decisions about love and loyalty echo outward into debates over succession, war, and what kind of future his world will have.

The series keeps explicit content lower than in many of Dalton's other works and instead emphasizes chivalry, slow-building attraction, and the weight of oaths. It is a strong pick if you like the idea of dragons and court intrigue, and you are curious how Dalton's worldbuilding and character work translate into a more conventional epic fantasy frame.
