Series background & context

The Makalang series begins with Will Hawthorne, a former Marine and exhausted single father who just wants a quiet weekend in the woods with his live-action roleplaying group. A fall through a cave drops him into the world of Taitala, a strange alien realm where beastkin peoples are sliding toward extinction.

In Taitala, virile males are vanishingly rare. Most men are physically weak, infertile, and can only manage intimacy a few times a month, while women of every clan are strong, capable, and desperate for children. Will's arrival in this world makes him a living myth: the Makalang, a legendary outsider said to restore balance and reverse the long decline.

At first he is just trying to survive. The series traces his uneasy transition from bewildered castaway to clan hero, then to political force. Along the way he gathers wives and lovers from multiple beastkin cultures, forming a sprawling found family that includes fox girls, cat warriors, bat-winged scouts, and more. Their relationships are explicit and central to the story, but the books are equally interested in the pressure of being at the center of so many expectations.

As Will learns more about Taitala, he discovers that the fertility crisis is only one symptom of deeper problems. Ancient cults like the Gates of the Golden Staff, rival clans, and shadowy groups such as the Black Sky movement all have their own plans for the Makalang legend. Some want to use him, some want to destroy him, and others simply want him to pick a side in conflicts that began long before he was born.

Each volume widens the scope. City-states like Yama Kana, reclusive factions such as the diynang, and the mysterious kaliman all get pulled into the struggle over who will shape Taitala's future. Will is constantly forced to balance his duty to the world with his responsibility to the growing family that depends on him.

Across eight novels, The Makalang mixes harem dynamics, large-scale battles, and slow-burn worldbuilding. Readers can expect vivid alien cultures, plenty of action, and an ongoing question hanging over everything: how much can one outsider change without losing himself in the process.
