Last Chancers Books in Order

The Last Chancers series follows the 13th Penal Legion, a force made from Imperial convicts who are offered a narrow route away from execution. Their service is simple in theory: survive the missions nobody else wants. In practice, the missions are selected because survival is unlikely.

Colonel Schaeffer commands the Legion with a brutal sense of purpose. His soldiers call themselves Last Chancers because every operation may be their final opportunity to earn redemption, avoid a death sentence, or at least settle an old score. Lieutenant Kage is the main viewpoint character, and he is not a polished Imperial hero. He is a dangerous man trying to understand a system that sees him as expendable.

Nobody joins willingly.

13th Legion starts the story and introduces the unit's basic bargain. Kage and his fellow prisoners are sent into a Tyranid-infested war zone, where discipline is enforced as much by explosive collars and fear as by any idea of loyalty. The book establishes the darkly practical tone of the series: these are soldiers with ugly histories, but they still have to rely on each other when the shooting starts.

In Kill Team, Schaeffer's survivors take on a mission involving the T'au. The book narrows the focus to a small group working behind enemy lines, where every member has reasons to distrust the others and the Imperium's official goals may not tell the whole story.

Annihilation Squad sends Kage and the Legion toward Armageddon. The war is larger, the mission is more desperate, and the pressure inside the squad keeps growing. Old relationships, personal grudges, and questions about Kage's own instability become as dangerous as the enemy.

The series is military science fiction with a rougher, more cynical edge than many Space Marine stories. These are not superhuman warriors born into a code. They are prisoners, killers, deserters, and failures trying to stay alive in a universe that has already written them off. That makes victories feel costly and often temporary.

The books also work as a look at the Imperium from the bottom. Schaeffer's Legion goes where commanders need deniable assets, which means the stories can move through Tyranid war zones, xenos conflicts, hive cities, and political trouble without pretending that Imperial authority is clean or fair.
