The Legacy of Caliban Books in Order

The Legacy of Caliban is Gav Thorpe's Dark Angels trilogy, built around the Chapter's oldest wound. The Dark Angels are proud descendants of the First Legion, but much of their identity is shaped by a secret: the Fallen, former brothers who turned against the Lion during the destruction of Caliban.

The Chapter's hunt for the Fallen is not a side mission. It affects its alliances, its internal hierarchy, and the choices its leaders make when they believe a clue has appeared. Ravenwing begins with Sammael and the Dark Angels' fast-moving second company. The Ravenwing pursues signs of the Fallen across a war zone, but the mission brings the Chapter into conflict with Imperial forces who do not understand why the Dark Angels are willing to take such risks. It is the most direct entry point, mixing pursuit, battlefield action, and the Chapter's habit of withholding crucial information.

Master of Sanctity brings Interrogator-Chaplain Asmodai to the center. His relentless suspicion makes him effective in the hunt, but it also creates friction with allies and fellow Dark Angels. As the hunt closes in on a possible prize, Brothers Annael and Telemenus are drawn into an operation with consequences beyond one captured renegade.

The Unforgiven concludes the trilogy with Cypher in Dark Angels custody. His surrender appears to offer the Chapter a chance to resolve its ancient shame, but Cypher is never a simple prisoner and never a simple answer. The novel gathers the trilogy's questions about atonement, obedience, and what the Dark Angels are becoming in the effort to correct their past.

These books work well for readers who enjoy Space Marines with a more knightly, secretive atmosphere. The Ravenwing, Deathwing, Chaplains, Librarians, and Inner Circle all have roles to play, but the real thread is the tension between duty to the Imperium and duty to the Chapter's hidden cause.

You can read the trilogy without prior knowledge, though Angels of Darkness gives useful earlier context for the Fallen and the Dark Angels' divided history. The books also have several connected short stories, collected in Lords of Caliban, for readers who want more character-focused episodes.
