Series background & context

The World of Tir-Dagrau is one of Gav Thorpe's original fantasy settings, separate from Warhammer and its familiar armies. It is a rough, dangerous world of clans, contested hunting grounds, old grudges, and people whose reputation can matter as much as their strength.

The main published entry is The Story of Hau'Rax: A Tale of Infamy & Slaughter. It introduces Hau'Rax long before he becomes the feared war chief of the Blackskull clan. Across the Forest of Echoes and the Forgotten Lowlands, his name is known for violence and contempt for enemies. The story goes back to the beginning, when he is simply the eighteenth child of a worm farmer.

Everyone starts somewhere.

Hau'Rax is drawn into conflict when the Wildmoon clan raids Blackskull hunting grounds during the rule of chieftain Ka'Raz. Sent out with other young people to find the raiders, he faces an experience that will alter the course of his life. The scale is smaller than a war for a kingdom, but that is part of the appeal. A raid, a feud, and a decision made under pressure can become the beginning of a legend.

Tir-Dagrau is built around a frontier feeling. The land is not a neutral backdrop. Forests, lowlands, tribal territories, and travel routes affect who can survive, who has power, and where danger comes from. The setting leaves room for stories of war chiefs and clan politics, but also for ordinary people caught in the wake of larger ambitions.

The tone is direct and hard-edged. This is not a courtly fantasy about polished heroes arriving with a prophecy. It is a tale of family position, violence, and the ways a person can be shaped by the expectations of their community. Hau'Rax's later notoriety gives the story an added question: what turns a farmer's child into someone other people fear?

Because this is a short work, it is an easy way to sample Thorpe's original worldbuilding without committing to a long series. It is also useful for readers who know him mainly through Warhammer and want to see him working with a setting where the rules, cultures, and history are his own.

Start with The Story of Hau'Rax. It functions as an origin story and a first introduction to Tir-Dagrau, giving a glimpse of the clans and landscapes that shape the wider world.
