Series background & context
The Kinsmen stories take place in a far-future, spacefaring setting where human genetic engineering has gone far beyond cosmetic tweaks. Certain families have turned enhancement into power, creating hereditary lines of telepaths, assassins, pilots, and other specialists whose abilities are as dangerous as they are valuable.
These families are known collectively as the kinsmen. They run corporations, control trade routes, and settle disputes with quiet sabotage as often as with open war. Political alliances are sealed with marriages, and a contract gone wrong can spark blood feuds that last generations.
Each novella in the Kinsmen universe focuses on a different pair of protagonists caught at the intersection of duty, family loyalty, and attraction. In one story, a woman raised as an elite assassin takes on a revenge job that forces her to confront the man who once betrayed her. In another, a refugee telepath hiding in a backwater world is pulled back into high‑stakes corporate conflict when her talents are exposed.
Romance is always at the heart of these tales, but it unfolds against a backdrop of kidnapping attempts, hostile takeovers, and daring space chases. The books are short, fast reads, packed with high-tech gadgets, sleek ships, and clever uses of psychic power.
Because the stories are only lightly connected, you can start anywhere, but together they build a picture of a ruthless, glittering future where falling in love can be the most dangerous move on the board.
