Series background & context
The Edge series unfolds along a narrow strip of land that separates two very different realities. On one side lies the Broken, a version of our world where magic is nothing more than a story and people worry about paychecks and groceries. On the other side is the Weird, a realm ruled by blue‑blood nobles, duels, and deadly spells.
Between them sits the Edge, a ragged borderland where magic and mundane life collide. Edgers can cross into either world, but they truly belong in neither. Most live hand to mouth, relying on odd jobs, small bits of magic, and fierce loyalty to their families to survive.
Each novel in the series follows a different couple trying to carve out a place for themselves against this backdrop. One book centers on a young woman responsible for two younger brothers, whose rare magical talent draws the attention of a noble from the Weird just as a terrifying swarm of otherworldly predators begins to hunt her community. Another sends readers deep into swampy territory called the Mire, where a sprawling clan is dragged into espionage and war.
What ties the books together is the sense that the Edge is both dangerous and home. Characters deal with rusted trucks and grocery bills one moment and magical assassins the next. Family politics can be as fraught as international intrigue, and love stories grow out of shared battles, stubbornness, and the hard work of rebuilding after trauma.
The Edge also brushes up against other Ilona Andrews worlds. Familiar faces slip from these novels into later stories, especially the Innkeeper Chronicles, rewarding readers who follow the connections. Even so, each book stands on its own as a complete, emotionally satisfying adventure.
