Magic Claims

by Ilona Andrews

2023

A nearby town is being terrorized by a mysterious force demanding tribute, and its leaders beg Kate and Curran for help. Taking on the threat could secure a strong base for the Wilmington Pack, but it will also expose their power to enemies watching from afar.

Series background & context

Kate Daniels: Wilmington Years picks up years after the end of the original Kate Daniels series. Kate and Curran have stepped away from the constant crises of post‑Shift Atlanta and moved with their young son, Conlan, to the coastal city of Wilmington, North Carolina.

On paper, the plan is simple: keep a low profile, build a quieter life, and give their child something resembling a normal childhood. In practice, Kate and Curran are still who they are—problem magnets with sharp instincts and an ingrained habit of defending people who cannot defend themselves.

Each long novella in this sequence introduces a new local threat. In one, a seemingly straightforward attempt to rescue a kidnapped boy pulls Kate into a conflict involving sea‑born monsters and hidden magic along the shore. In another, a desperate town begs for help against an ancient power entrenched in the nearby forest, forcing Kate and Curran to weigh the cost of stepping back into a leadership role.

The Wilmington setting feels different from Atlanta: smaller scale, salt air, and fewer entrenched supernatural factions. That change of scenery lets readers see Kate and Curran as parents and neighbors as well as warriors. There are still brutal fights and clever magical solutions, but there are also school issues, home repairs, and the awkwardness of making new friends when your reputation precedes you.

Tonally, these stories sit between the high‑stakes climax of Magic Triumphs and the more intimate spin‑offs. The fate of the world is not on the line, but entire communities and families are. It is a space for Kate and Curran to grow into the next version of themselves without losing the edge that made readers love them in the first place.
